How we tested

Use the linked vendor records to check documented terms. Ask providers to demonstrate your required workflows and confirm current commercial terms in writing.

Guide inclusion criteria explain the evidence-packet policy and current guide orders. Full methodology is published at our Buyer's Guide methodology page.

How to choose a telemedicine platform as a solo practitioner

  1. Controlled-substance e-Rx. Confirm the proposed plan covers your prescribing workflow and any required integrations.
  2. Async vs synchronous workflow. Decide how messaging and video visits fit your practice, then test the documentation workflow.
  3. Insurance billing depth. Confirm whether claims submission is included or requires a separate service.

Two of the criteria above are dated by federal rules, and the dates matter more than the feature list. The controlled-substance point: DEA and HHS's Fourth Temporary Extension of COVID-19 Telemedicine Flexibilities for Prescription of Controlled Medications (90 FR 61301, published December 31, 2025) keeps the authority to prescribe controlled medications via telemedicine without a prior in-person evaluation in effect from January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026 only. A solo physician whose practice depends on that workflow is choosing a platform against a rule that expires at year end, and should ask the vendor how it will handle whatever replaces it. The billing point: CMS's Medicare Telehealth FAQ (updated February 26, 2026) confirms that through December 31, 2027 beneficiaries can receive Medicare telehealth anywhere in the United States, including audio-only visits in the home, and that home visits billed with POS 10 have been paid at the non-facility rate since January 1, 2024; from January 1, 2028 the rural and facility rules return for everything except behavioral health. On the BAA: 45 CFR 164.308(b)(1) permits a covered practice to let a vendor handle electronic PHI only with the written assurances of a business associate contract, which makes the business associate agreement part of the platform evaluation.

For a solo practitioner the platform is one line in a larger stack decision. The telehealth platform comparison covers the same vendors from the EHR-integration side, and practice management software vs EHR settles whether the bundled option is replacing one system or three. Solo behavioral health practices that bill insurance through SimplePractice or TheraNest should pair this guide with best medical billing services for behavioral health practices, and any telehealth-only practice should read best HIPAA compliance for telehealth-only practices before signing a BAA it has not compared. The malpractice side of cross-state telehealth, whether the policy covers the visit at all, is in the malpractice insurance comparison guide.

Bottom line

EHR fact freshness and sources

Dates below apply to the named canonical facts, not to every claim on this page. Unknown means the canonical record has no value; not published means the vendor does not publish it.
